Receipt is a collaboration between artist Andy Buck and Carl Adamshick. It is a book that loves names and dialog. Andy’s carved, wooden figures alongside Carl’s poems begin a conversation about friendships and their sometimes peculiar behavior.
“Saturday Morning to Sunday Night” . . .
Rain is breaking open on the pavement.
The low, dark clouds
shift under a sheet of night.
I’ve become a moon
distant and circling the few things
I love. Orbital tether.
You are to lose yourself
completely in the listening.
You are to lay your self down
and drift far. Night is for you
to be lifted through another,
to forget and be reminded
our bodies are the planet they live on.

Carl Adamshick is the author of Curses and Wishes, which won the Walt Whitman award from the Academy of American Poets and Saint Friend, published with McSweeney’s. Both titles received an Oregon Book Award. He has taught at Catlin Gabel and lectured at Stanford University and the American International School in Vienna, as well as being a writer-in-residence at the William Stafford Archive at Lewis and Clark College. He is a founder and editor at Tavern Books, a non-profit press dedicated to poetry and the preservation of books.
Andy Buck’s colorful artwork has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States. Recipient of the Mid Atlantic Arts Fellowship, his work is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Art and Design, New York; the Fuller Museum, Massachusetts; and the Boston Public Library. He is currently a Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he teaches woodworking and furniture design. In 2011, during a break as juror of the Hawaii Wood Show, Andy ran into his old friend Carl Adamshick, as he walked along the Northshore beaches in Oahu. They sat together in the sand, had a beer, and watched the surf.
