High Plains Book Awards

The High Plains Books Awards have been established to recognize regional authors and/or literary works which examine and reflect life on the High Plains including the states of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Nominated books must have been published for the first time in any format in 2010 and written by a living regional author or writing team, and/or be a literary work by a living author or writing team which examines and reflects life on the High Plains.

Nominated books may be fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Nominations are also being accepted for an Emeritus Award which recognizes a body of work by a living regional author and/or writing team which has made a significant contribution to the literature of the High Plains region. Winners will be honored at an Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the High Plains Book Fest in early October 2011 in Billings.

The first-round readers for the High Plains Book Awards had the difficult task of selecting their favorites from among a record number of nominated books. Books nominated in more than one category were scored by separate readers in each category. The scores in all the categories were extremely close, with a tie resulting in four finalists in one category. The following books are the finalists for the 2011 Awards:

Horse Trackspoems by Henry Real Bird, published by Lost Horse Press.
