The moment you think you see where Sailing Away is going to take you, I promise: you don't. These
deft, sometimes daft, consistently darksome stories are as impossible to outguess and bewilderingly interesting
to ride as the postmodern Pacific that inspires them. ---David
James Duncan, author of The Brothers K and The River Why
A bit of Carver, Hemingway, Conrad, Dana
and . . . a lot of Richard Morgan. As a sophomore in high
school I quit studying and devoted my time to reading. I
read anything that had a boat or a ship in it, and was
left with the shadowy legacy of Richard Dana's Two
Years Before the Mast until now. Now I have Richard
Morgan's narratives in Sailing Away to turn
to, and return to, when I want some good fiction spiked
with sea salt and humor. Sea stories yes, but there is
much more in these thoughtful, deeply felt stories. . . .
When Morgan spins a fishing story, his careful use of
specific detail puts you right there: at the wheel in
green water or in the cockpit gaffing a huge Chinook
salmon. Lost Horse Press is to be congratulated and
thanked for gathering up these pieces from little
magazines and putting them together in this volume for us
to enjoy. ---Carlos Reyes
