Lost Horse Design Studio offers graphic design and desktop publishing services needed to create professional print publications. We are committed to expert service and quality work. Lost Horse Design Studio produces complete publications or we can provide our services a la carte to support our clients’ specific needs. Each project is created specifically for each client’s image and audience. Our designs are free from any “studio style,” which is why each client’s work has a distinct appearance and feel. Book Production

Lost Horse Design Services specializes in book production. New publishing technology has made it easier and less expensive for those who want to publish their own books. We can facilitate all stages of book development. Our book production services include cover design, interior design, layout and typesetting, and proofreading:

Cover Design

People do judge a book by its cover. A cover has to cut through the noise on the bookstore shelf, to intrigue the reader’s eye, and to demand, not with the squeak of a mouse, but with the roar of a lion, “Open me.” Lost Horse Design Studio will create a compelling cover appropriate to your subject matter.

Interior Design

We create an interior design that complements your subject matter or theme. Our goal is to design an elegant book that is a pleasure for readers and that helps the book compete with the thousands of books introduced every year. This process includes font selection, header and footer design, page layout, and graphic embellishments.

Page Design, Layout & Typesetting

Page design determines the look of the printed page, in terms of the fonts, sizes, line lengths, leading, colors, position of the type elements, as well as the arrangement of elements on the page (headings, text, boxes, photographs, illustrations, charts or tables, captions). Once we have created a design for your book, we format your copy according to the approved design. As part of layout and typesetting, we create the disk files required by your printer’s electronic prepress department.

Proofreading

Proofreading occurs after layout and typesetting. Proofreading is a quick read designed to catch typos, misspellings, bad breaks, loose lines, inaccurate headers or footers.

Graphics & Scanning

We can make use of your existing graphic files for illustrations, or we can create original illustrations. If your book includes photographs, we can scan your prints into the electronic document.

Proofreading II

We review a previously edited document one final time, checking for any remaining errors and inconsistencies.

Critiquing

We review your document, consider how well it supports your publishing mission, and offer suggestions for improvement, including changes in content, approach, organization, and tone.

Terms

Lost Horse Design Studio’s minimum charge is $50, with billing in quarter-hour increments. Standard hourly rate is $50. Jobs requiring immediate turnaround will be charged an additional 25% fee.

Payment is due upon completion of the project or at agreed upon intermediate stages. For large projects, partial payment is required before work begins.

We also work under a retainer agreement, where we perform a certain amount of work for a monthly fee at a lower hourly rate. Please contact us for more information if you are interested in this type of arrangement.
