Lost Horse Press is very proud to announce the debut of a Spoken Word/Performance Art workshop for young writers, as well as the start of the Sandpoint Teen Slam.

On 3 October at 6:30 pm, Lost Horse Press and the Sandpoint Library will host the Lost Horse Spoken Word/Performance Art workshop for junior high and high school students in the Rude Girls Room of the Sandpoint Library. All students are invited to register for this free workshop that will concentrate on preparing young writers for the Sandpoint Teen Slam, educate students on the fine points of the slam, help students grow in their appreciation of poetry and their attitude toward public speaking, and inspire expression and creativity through group writing exercises and performance. To register, please call Lost Horse Press at 208.255.4410. Again, the workshops are free for all Bonner County students.

On 10 October at 6:30 pm, Lost Horse Press is pleased to present the Sandpoint Teen Slam, the first in a series of 6 spoken word venues for young writers—including semi-final and final events intended to select three finalists—to take place in the Rude Girls Room of the Sandpoint Library, our co-host. The winners of the Sandpoint Teen Slam will go on to represent Sandpoint in the finals of the Get Lit Teen Slam in Spokane, Washington in late April. The Sandpoint Teen Slam continues on 14 November 2007 at 6:30 pm, 9 January 2008 at 6:00 pm (note earlier starting time in 2008), 13 February 2008 at 6:00 pm, semi-finals on 12 March 2008 at 6:00 pm and finals on 9 April 2008 at 6:00 pm. All slams will take place in the Rude Girls Room of the Sandpoint Library. Sign up for the slams takes place a half hour before the slam. Admission is free for participants and audience.

Leading the workshops will be Sandpoint spoken word poet, Hali Clizer. Ms. Clizer earned her BA in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from Washington State University in May 2005. During her studies, she received the coveted “Pass with Distinction” rating on her Junior Writing Portfolio, and her required Thesis Project for the WSU Honors College was titled “Learning to Make Mistakes: A One-Draft Writer Reforms.” While finishing her studies, Hali worked for over a year as administrative assistant for the McNair Achievement Program at the University of Idaho, which prepares undergraduate students to go on to earn their doctoral degrees through intensive undergraduate research. She now spends her days working on one of the largest alpaca ranches in North America and as a classroom assistant at the Sandpoint Waldorf School. She has been performing her own spoken word in Sandpoint and Spokane for over two years. Ms. Clizer will also serve as MC for the Sandpoint Teen Slam.

For additional information or to register for the workshop, please contact Lost Horse Press at 208.255.4410 or email losthorsepress@mindspring.com.
