Christopher Howell Workshop, Reading
& Booksigning
January 30 & 31, 2004

Christopher Howell Workshop, Reading & Booksigning Lost Horse Press and the Sandpoint Library announce a Poetry Workshop for the New Year featuring Spokane poet, Christopher Howell. The program takes place at Sandpoint Library's Rude Girls Room on Friday, 30 January 2004 from 5 pm until 8 pm, and on Saturday, 31 January 2004 from 10 am until 4 pm. Tuition for the class is $75.

The course will proceed by means of discussion, the basic grist being student writing, though some additional materials will be provided. Thematic emphasis will center on the "image," how it may be constructed, ways in which it may be made to function, and its relationship to the other elements which comprise a poem. Students will need to bring writing materials, a copy of a favorite poem (by someone else), and four of their own poems (ten copies each).

Christopher Howell's nine collections of poems include the recent Just Waking from Lost Horse Press. He has received fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission, the Massachusetts Council for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His poems have appeared in such journals as Antioch Review, Colorado Review, Field, Harper's, Hudson Review, Iowa Review, North American Review, Poetry Northwest, and Gettysburg Review, and have twice been awarded the Pushcart Prize. He has taught at Colorado State University, Willamette University, Whitman College, Emporia State University, and Oregon State University, and teaches now in the Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing at Eastern Washington University where he edits the semi-annual journal, Willow Springs. Since 1975, he has been director and principal literary editor for Lynx House Press.

A reading and book signing featuring Christopher Howell will conclude the weekend workshop. The public is invited to attend the reading, book sale and book signing by Christopher Howell at the Sandpoint Library on Saturday, 31 January 2004 at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited to attend this free event.
